Cozy Memories Blanket Knit Along

Do you have mini skeins of fingering weight yarn or leftovers from sock knitting? Beginning May 3, 2016, from 1:00 to 3:00, we'll be offering a free KAL every Wednesday for anybody interested in knitting along with us. This mitered square blanket uses around 5 grams of fingering weight sock yarn per square. The Cozy Memories blanket KAL is free but we ask that you register so we know how many people to expect. We will have opportunities for you to purchase and swap mini skeins as you build your one-of-a-kind blanket (search the #cozymemoriesblanket tag on Instagram for lots of eye candy and inspiration). Please call the shop to register for the KAL.

Kemper Wray's Coziest Memory in progress.

The recommended pattern is Kemper Wray's free pattern: The Coziest Memory. However -- you are free to use any pattern you choose! Please download and print your pattern prior to our first meeting. Details and strategies for starting a memory blanket can be found here: The Coziest Memory Blanket Recipe.

A few months ago, I discovered this YouTube video by podcaster Molly of Homespun House, that inspired me to start this project; it's not for everybody, but I know that many of you have already started blankets of your own and would love to join others who are working on this project.

May Sunday Sweater KAL - Atlanta Mesh Top

The Sunday afternoon group is back to sweaters after a brief shawl diversion last month. The Atlanta Mesh pullover is featured below with Tahki Stacy Charles' Tandem (a cotton/viscose blend). This has been a favorite with the staff -- Debbie, Gayle, and Alisa have each knit one. If you're considering a first garment that you can wear in the summer, this is it!

  • Expect support before, during, and after the KAL - you will have opportunities through our Ravelry group to ask questions until you finish your project.

  • Expect extras - special discounts for participants, one-off workshops like how to block your knits, and other fun treats.
*We choose patterns that are available through the Ravelry in-store program. This means we purchase the pattern on your behalf. April 2016 Calendar Updates

I've made a few changes to the April 2016 calendar and you can find the updated information at this link:

We have some openings in the following classes -- additional details regarding cost and homework (if required) are in the Class Descriptions link here and on in the sidebar.

Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom - April 20, 2016 from 10-1. Did you know that you can weave a scarf in less time than you can knit it? To learn to weave on the Cricket Rigid Heddle Loom, you'll need 200 yards of two different colors of worsted weight stash yarn (or buy more at the shop!) and begin weaving a stunning scarf. You can then borrow the loom to finish your scarf and return it within the week. Beginners are welcome!

Beginning Spinning (Drop Spindle) - April 21, 2016 from 10-12. Spinning instructor Lisa Rose will teach you how to spin by hand with a drop spindle (bring your own or purchase one at the shop). This is a great introduction to fiber and fleece that will begin your journey to making your own yarn.

Nuno Felting - April 23, 2016 from 1-4. Nuno Felting instructor Gika Rector will teach you her method of wet felting on to a textile base (silk chiffon, cotton gauze) using dyed wool, and other fibers that can be incorporated on the base to create a textural and colorful fabric. Anybody can do this!

Patterning in Brioche - April 27, 2016 from 10-12. Brioche is huge right now and this is the next step class if you already know how brioche knitting. The pattern we're using for this class is Flying Fish Scarf by Nancy Marchant. PREREQUISITE: Basic Brioche Class or be comfortable knitting 2-color brioche. Please bring 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn in contrasting colors (approx 420 yards each), 16" US size 5 circular needles, and a ring marker. Intermediate Level. $30

  • You love your yarn but you're disenchanted with the pattern
  • You have over 600 yards of a lace weight yarn that you don't know what to do with it.
  • You want to knit with us on Sundays but don't want to knit a sweater
  • You want to knit an Urban Chic stole:

Please call us (281-528-8664) during business hours to reserve your spot. The cost is $30 and we will purchase your Urban Chic pattern for you and give you a 10% discount on yarn you purchase to knit this shawl.

April 10, 2016 - 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Thursday Shawl KAL - Chasing Rainbows

We have a new knit-along to announce! The April Shawl KAL will be Boo Knits Chasing Rainbows:

copyright Boo-Knits 2015
Details:

The KAL will meet the following dates and times:

Thursday, April 7 - 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Thursday, April 14 - 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Thursday, April 21 - 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Thursday, April 28 - 1:00 - 3:00 pm

The shawl is designed for lace weight yarns (keep reading for a surprise). The cost to join the KAL is $40 and includes a discount on lace weight yarn that you purchase to knit the shawl, and the Chasing Rainbows pattern will be free for KAL participants* - please call 281-528-8664 during business hours (Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 - 5:00 p.m.) to sign up for the KAL.

We're learning from posting these gorgeous project and pattern photos, that you love the idea of knitting with the same yarn and beads that the designer has featured in the pattern photos. Many of the Chasing Rainbows projects on Ravelry were knit with a limited run of a colorway dyed especially for this Boo Knits shawl pattern. We contacted local dye artist Olivia Gauthier to create a colorway inspired by that special colorway. She used her silk/merino lace weight yarn to create 8 skeins of a truly beautiful yarn! That means the first 8 people who have already signed up and paid will get the opportunity to choose whether they'd like to knit the inspiration colorway. She also dyed a batch of solid colors with her silk/merino laceweight with silver sparkle bits in it for those who prefer to knit with a solid color. AND -- there's more. If you sign up for the KAL and wish to use beads, we've come up with two different bead options for you to purchase. (Beads are not required, however, and you can always purchase from your favorite bead store rather than our options).

What to expect from our Thursday Shawl KALs:
  • Expect to learn a lot through hands-on instruction from the KAL - you will be challenged to learn new skills!
  • Expect to have fun! While we're learning, we're also helping one another and socializing.
  • Expect support before, during, and after the KAL - you will have opportunities through our Ravelry group to ask questions until you finish your project.
  • Expect that because the group is popular and we like to say YES if you want to join us, that there might be as many as a dozen of you on the first day of the KAL! If you would prefer one-on-one time, Lisa is available to help you on Thursdays before the KAL.
  • Expect extras - special discounts for participants, one-off workshops like how to aggressively block your shawls, and other fun treats.
*We choose patterns that are available through the Ravelry in-store program. This means we purchase the pattern on your behalf. It's sent to you as a PDF via email and will be saved in YOUR Ravelry library. We do NOT buy the pattern and make photocopies -- your very own pattern copy should arrive in your email, and in some cases will have your name printed on it. A modest printing fee will apply if you'd like a printed color copy of the pattern.

Shibui Rain - New Yarn & Patterns

Spectrum
Free Pattern with Purchase (Wrap and Scarf)

Shibui Knits - Rain - 100% Mercerized Cotton in a DK-weight. This is an ideal cotton for our part of Texas and it pairs beautifully with Silk Cloud to create a stunning scarf or wrap. Twisted Yarns has most of the colors in stock as well as hard copies of the patterns for Nova, Meridian, and Equinox. All of the Shibui patterns in the SS2016 collection are available for in-store purchase at the shop, and when you visit, you can check out our updated Shibui yarn display at the front of the shop.

We also now stock Twig -- a new favorite that we discovered at our Shibui Mix Party in November. The simplicity of the Slope curved hem tank is an appealing possibility for a summer knit or as a layering piece year round.

NOTE: Some of our February classes still have openings! If you're interested in a class or project help, please call during business hours (Tuesday-Saturday, 10-5) to sign up or leave a voicemail (281-528-8664) and we'll call you back.

The Peacock's Tale - New KAL

We have unveiled our newest shawl knit-along (KAL) for February! This KAL is hosted by Lisa Greenburg on Thursday afternoons and has been incredibly popular. Each month Lisa selects a new shawl pattern -- something unique, fashionable and wearable -- with features designed to challenge you to achieve new skills in your knitting. For February, she's chosen The Peacock's Tale shawl. If you're an experienced (intermediate to advanced) and adventurous knitter who would like to meet regularly with others who are working on the same project, we'd love to have you! To join the KAL, please sign up at the shop or call us to reserve your spot and we'll take payment over the phone. Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 3. The cost to join the KAL is $30 and we meet 3 times in February with a 4th day as a bonus this month.

Week 1 - Thursday, February 4, 2016 - 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (swatch and cast on)
Week 2 - Thursday, February 11, 2016 - 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Week 3 - Thursday, February 18, 2016 - 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Week 4 - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - An earlier meeting time to be determined

You can purchase the pattern at Twisted Yarns or via Ravelry. To get the most out of your learning experience, we suggest using a lace weight yarn -- our yarn suggestions are below -- or let us help you choose a yarn. When you purchase yarn for the KAL, you will receive a 10% discount on the yarn.

Happiness is YARN! Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of our friends and customers! Thank you for supporting your local yarn shop. We are so grateful for all of you and enjoy your visits. We had a great 2015 and are gearing up for another fun year! Please subscribe to the email list because subscribers are among the first ones to know about special events and KALs. I've recommitted to the blog and will be updating more in 2016. Of course, you can also follow us on Facebook and me (Janet) on Instagram, where I post random things from the shop and my life.

Our January calendar is now live and linked in the sidebar of this blog and also below:

Please note that the class descriptions are also in the sidebar and linked again here for your convenience:

Twisted Yarns Class Descriptions

As a reminder, the class descriptions link lists all of the classes we regularly teach, regardless of whether or not they appear on the calendar in a given month. We are happy to set up a class for you -- or you can schedule a private lesson in order to have one-on-one help with your projects. If you're interested in moving on from beginning knitting, we'll tailor classes and lesson suggestions to your interests. The path to becoming a better knitter, crocheter, weaver, or spinner isn't always a linear one, and not all fiber lovers have the same goals. The important thing to know is that we have skilled instructors and staff members who remember what it was like to be a beginner and can ask questions and give you feedback so that you can discover what your passion is.

While it's likely you don't need more yarn, maybe you want to love to fall in love with your stash all over again, or you'd like to finish long-neglected projects. Perhaps you just need encouragement to rip out and start over -- or even de-stash yarn on Ravelry. We can help. Come and see us.
